Bac
Bac is located in the northwestern part of Serbia, on the left bank of the river Danube. Bac area is located between the Municipalities of Backa Palanka and Odzaci. Archaeological sites in the area of the municipality say that the area was inhabited since the earliest times, and it was a larger settlement during the Roman Empire.
The first written record date from the time of Emperor Justinian, found in his letter from the 535. The first mention of Bac date in 1094, when Bac’s archbishop was mentioned during the Zagreb diocese foundation.
Sights
- Franjevaki monastery. Fortress, and later the monastery of the Templars in Bac was mentioned at the end of the XII centuary. The monastery keeps italo-crete icon made by painter Dima in 1687. The monastery has one of the oldest libraries in the country.
- During the Crusades the first hospital in this part of Europe was founded in today's Franciscan monastery. The first pharmacy in Vojvodina was founded in Bac in the nineteenth century.
- A Turkish bath is located in Bac, and it is one of the best preserved monuments of Eastern culture in these areas.
- Fort in Bac is a medival building, known as one of the largest castles in Pannonia. It belongs to the so-called "Water Cities" because it is surrounded by rivers, and approached by the movable bridges.
