Irig

Irig municipality is located in Vojvodina, and belongs to the Srem district. Situated on the slopes of Fruska Gora, center of the municipality is the city of Irig. Archaeological finds in the territory of Irig point the fact that this part of Srem was inhabited in prehistoric times. Traces of antiquity were found.


It is hard now to quite reliably determine when and how the name of Irig developed. Name Irig is first mentioned in 1225, when Catholic Pauline monastery was established. As place and area, Irig has a rich history. Irig was under the Turks from 1526. to 1699, and then under Habsburg and Austro-Hungarians until it was liberated in 1918. It was important and strategic border stronghold of Hungary to Turkey.

Irig’s viniculture area with Karlovac’s, Ilok’s, Sid’s, and Slankamen’s makes an unique vineyard belt of Fruska Gora. During the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century a number of monasteries was built around Irig, were literacy, culture and education were carried out during the next centuries. Irig was the capital of Fruska Gora monasteries Hopovo and Krusedol, Grgeteg and Vrdnik’s Ravanica, Velika and Mala Remeta, Beocin and Rakovac.

Because of its geographical position, the whole Irig is one big picnic site. Forests, streams and slopes of Fruska Gora are heaven on earth. Vrdnik is known spa thanks to termal mineral waters, and a nice center for rehabilitation, recreation and leisure. And it is interesting that natural mineral water Jazak is one of the highest quality water in Europe.
