Leskovac

Leskovac is located in the heart of the vast and fertile valley of Leskovac, on a small river Veternica at the foot of Hisar hill, in the central part of Leskovac valley. Middle part of the municipality is passed by South Morava River. Leskovac is surrounded by three artificial lakes: Brestovacko, Barje, and Vlasinsko lake. Valley is surrounded by mountains Radan and Pasjaca to the west, Kukavica and Cemernik to the south, and Babicna Gora, Suva Planina, and Selicevica to the east. Leskovac is second largest city in southern Serbia, after Nis.


The oldest traces of life in this region come from 2000 BC. This region was inhabited by Dardans, Avars, Celts, Romans, Byzantines, and in the VI and VII century by Slavs.From those times archaeological remains were found Leskovac, on Hisar, at the location of Gradac near Zlokucane, in Mala Kopasnica, in Slatina river valley, in Kala at Grdelica, etc.. At 30 km from Leskovac there is a large archaeological site from the sixth century called Emperess’ City. The earliest recorded mention of Leskovac comes from the fourteenth century, where this place is described as a big village.

Events:

  • Grilling is held every year in the second week of September. This event follows a series of events such as fireworks, making the biggest burgers for Guinness Book of Records, competition in the fast eating of angry peppers, numerous concerts, performances of the cultural companies from home and abroad.
     
  • Leskovac summer cultural event held every summer. During this event the main street in town is closed for cars, and yard of SOP-Djokic house holds a large number of events in which various associations, clubs and cultural societes participate.
