Novi Sad

Novi Sad is the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. It is located in the southern part of Pannonian Plain, mainly in Backa, on the left bank of the river Danube. Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia. Human settlements on the territory of present-day Novi Sad could be followed to the Stone Age. The foundation village was located on the right side of the Danube, the territory today known as Petrovaradin.


This area was won by the Celts (in the fourth century BC), and Romans (in the first century BC).The Celts founded the first fortress on this place, located on the right bank of the Danube. The city was later conquered by the Ostrogoths, Gepids, Avars, Franks, Bulgarians and Byzantines again. Kingdom of Hungary won the area between 10 and 12 century. The town was first mentioned under the name Petrovaradin-Pétervárad, in documents from 1237. Since 1918. Novi Sad is part of Serbia.

Closer and further past shows that the people of Novi Sad always respected permanent human values: knowledge, work, dedication, peacefulness, tolerance and moderation as the fundamental determinants of progress.

Continuity of cultural development of the city is reflected through the duration of the development of institutions of national importance:

  • Matica Srpska
  • Serbian National Theater
  • Petrovaradin Fortress, the Museum of Novi Sad where Exebition of the Depositary Department of Cultural History, a permanent exibit showing the life from the first half of the eighteen to mid-twenty century is, as well as the Observatory and the Planetarium
  • Collections of Vojvodina Museum
  • Institute for Nature Conservation (nature collection has more than 60,000 pieces)
  • Gallery of Matica Srpska (over 7,000 works of art)
  • Gallery of Art, with donated collection of Rajka Mamurzic (which includes a collection of Serbian painted art from the second half of the twentieth century), and Art Collection, Memorial Collection of Pavle Beljanski (with the best works of Serbian Art from the first half of the twentieth century), regional collections in Sremska Kamenica, and Memorial Collection ‘Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj’ in Sremska Kamenica, etc.

Nature wealth:

  • Thanks to the excellent conditions for wine Fruska Gora vineyards are one of the most significant in Central Europe since Middle Age. There are three Fruska Gora centers for the production of wines in the area: Petrovaradin with Sremski Karlovci, Irig and Erdevik. Today, Fruska Gora is known after Riesling wine, Neoplanta, Merlot, Sémillon, Parishioner, Sirmium, and two native species, Slankamenka and Bermet. The last one was drank at the Palace in Vienna. Tourists can visit the wine cellar in Sremski Karlovci that is specifically arranged for the tasting of Karlovac’s wines.
  • Not far from Novi Sad National Park Fruska Gora is located. Kovilj-Petrovaradin marsh is situated in Danube area near Novi Sad.
