Wine road Palic
This whole region lies on the sandy soil created after the disappearance of a prehistoric Pannonian Sea. Therefore, wines of the area are popularly known as wines from the sand. Sandy grounds, moderate continental climate and quality of grapevine help cultivars to produce very drinkable wines.
Wine history
Wine tradition of Subotica-Horgos sands is over 2000 years old. In Backa, viticulture experienced its progress after the breakout of phylloxera in Europe. At that time, Palic, Choka and Pearl Island in New Becej established three wine cellars, which today are the backbone of development of viticulture in this area.
Cellar in Choka founded in 1903is one of the rare beautiful monuments of great wine culture. Basement Palic was created on the site of the former agricultural school, established in 1896, and is is successor of the old wine tradition of Subotica-Horgos sands. Wine is sold in Budapest, London, and other markets in Europe.
Vineyards and enology today
Subotica-Horgos sands spread on more than 24,000 hectares, and almost all of that area is suitable for growing vines. Vineyards are grouped around the settlements in the municipalities of Subotica and Kanizsa.
Holders of wine production in this region are Coka Winery and Cellar Palic. Winery Coka have wines with power of the stud’s blood, and is the producer of top-quality wines of which we recommend merlot, muscat otonel, stud’s blood. There are also pino gri, pino noar, and pino blanc. Basement Palic produces, among other top quality wines, a sparkling wine called French kiss, which is based on autochthonous species of the region called kevedinka.
Whine roads
A special curiosity is knightly order of wine ‘Arena Sabatkienze’. Knights of the Order spread the popularity of the wine and the culture of wine drinking. The old wine traditions are cherished by certain rituals in the unusual and attractive uniforms. Knights are organized into ranks, and the ritual of receiving the order means to test the candidates knowledge of wine.
What to eat?
The typical food of this region, goulash, is a good match with samerloom. Cabernet goes well with the chicken stew, and kadarka the local wine goes well with beef steak and mushrooms.
What to see?
Palic is lake, spa, and the town that is one of the most popular tourist sites in Serbia. It is a fashionable resort with a beautiful ambience and amenities, baroque park, monuments, architecture, secession, the champion of comfort. Inside of diameter of one kilometer there are hotels, restaurants, beaches, tennis courts, casino, zoo.
One should walk around the Ludas lake, which was declared a special nature reserve, go to a large number of farms, see the ostrich farm in Guljas Cardi, go on a trip to Zobnatica (30 km) that is a thoroughbred horse stud-farm with a tradition of over 200 years. All that is pure pleasure.
You must visit Subotica, particularly its center. For the true experts, Palic is synonymous of beauty, sophisticated and unusual culinary skills, and echo of cymbals and cantabile violins.
