Smederevo Fortress

The city of Smederevo was one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. The core was represented by the so-called triangular small town, at the top of the Big, again triangular city. The larger part was built immediately after the small town was, which was completed in 1430. Small town had 6, and the Big city had 19 large square towers - a total of 25. Situated at the confluence of rivers Danube and Jezava, it was built by Serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic (1427-1456) in the second quarter of the fifteenth century (the 1428th year), and Smederevac got its name after it.

Fortress is of a classic water type (surrounded by the Danube and Jezava, and with artificial moat to the south that connects the two rivers), and it is fortification of the low lands, which makes it unique in the Serbian medieval architecture. It was modeled by Constantinople and its walls. Heavy revenues, and long and exhausting work on the construction of the city left their marks in the national memory, and a curse tied to the name of Eirene.

Smederevo remained the capital of Despotovine until its collapse in 1459. year. After that comes under the Ottomans. Suffered significant damage during the Ottoman period, during World War II, and the last major damage was an explosion of ammunition in 1941. year. Today, the fortress is a cultural and historical property, a tourist destination, and a great space for cultural events, and one of the most famous is Castle Theater.
