Golden Age of this ancient pearl was at the time of Tetrarchy (rule of the four) Diocletian, Maximilian, Constantius and Galerius, who chose Sirmium to be their capital. In 1180 the town was annexed by Hungary, and Byzantium unsuccessfuly and repeatedly tried to win it back.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth century it was repetedly destroyed by the Turks, and in 1526 the city fell under Ottoman rule. At that time development of Mitrovica, as well as Turkish Kasaba begun. Sremska Mitrovica was incorporated in Serbia in 1918.

One can see in Sirmium: Imperial Palace, the ancient Palace with terms, Sirmium granary, a monumental Roman bath, the remains of the ancient Roman water duct, and University of the God Jupiter. Aside from Sirmium, there are: the Museum of Srem (1885), Library Gligorije Vozarevic (1886), Gallery ‘Lazar Vozarević’ (1973), Theater Dobrica Milutinovic, Cultural Center "Sirmiumart" (1971).

Picnic sites in the vicinity of Sremska Mitrovica. National Park Fruska Gora with forests, beautiful meadows and numerous monasteries, is definitely the number one resort, and ideal place for rest and leisure. As a true gem of untouched nature special nature reserve Zasavica in Macva’s part of the municipality stands out with extremely rare species of flora and fauna. There are forests in the vicinity of Sremska Mitrovica, unique wild environment, rich in high and low game, which attracts attention of hunters from all continents, and the Sava river, suitable for sport fishing.
