Sremski Karlovci

Municipality and city Sremski Karlovci, or "Baroque City", are located in Vojvodina, in the South Backa district, but belong to Srem. The city is located on the right bank of the Danube River. During the Roman Empire a small fortress was situated at the place of present day Karlovac. The town was first mentioned in 1308 as a fortress called Karom, built on Roman foundations, as it is still called on the slopes of Fruska Gora and bank of the river Danube. Sremski Karlovci is one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in Serbia.


Sremski Karlovci is one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in Serbia. During the reign of the Habsburg Empire, in the eighteenth and nineteenth century it was the religious and cultural center of the Serbian people. Since 1713 Karlovci is the seat of the Serbian metropolitan.

It is famous after good wine houses, wine cellars, and high-quality wines that have history 17 centuries long, and their wines are known in all meridians of the world. Sremski Karlovci are located 10 kilometers from Novi Sad.

The most important cultural and historical monuments

  • Patriarch’s Palace – built in 1894 on the initiative of Serbian Patriarch Djordje Brankovic, and with the designs of architect Vladimir Nikolic. Palace has a repository with many icons, portraits of the dignitaries of the Serbian Church, old books, and items of the past.
  • Cathedral Church of St. Nikola
  • Karlovac Hight School – the first Serbian grammar school frounded in 1791
  • Seminary – founded three years after the high school, the founder is metropolitan Stefan Stratimirovic. Seminary worked as high school since 1914.
  • Fountain of four lions – symbol of Karlovac, designed by Italian architect Guiseppe Aprili in honor of completion of the first urban watter supply. There is an interesting legend that says that a man who drinks water from the fountain will come back to Karlovci in order to get merried.
  • Catholic Church ‘Holy Trinity’ – built in 18th century, with a beautifully engraved gate.
  • Chapel of Peace – built in 1817 as a symbol of peace agreement between The Holy Alliance and the Turks.
  • The house where Branko Radicevic lived.

  • Grape Ball held every end of September, or beginning of October to celebrate the wine, worth seeing
