Maglic Fortress
Maglic is a medieval fortress in the Ibar gorge, 20 km south of Kraljevo. It is located on the top of the hill, around which the river Ibar flows. The river makes a sharp curve surrounding the hill from three sides. Plateau where the fortress was built rises several hundred meters from the bottom of the gorge, and only one caravan road connected the Morava valley and Kosovo Polje.
Maglic is made of 8 towers connected by walls, and its interior, which includes 2190 m, is entered through two gates. Fortification walls are 270 m long, while their width is 2 m, with a battlement (width about 55 cm). The path is protected by a wooden fence from the inside, and its height is about 7 m. Once in the fortress were: Palace, Church St. George, a well, and a tank.
It is not known when the Maglic was built, but it is considered that it was probably built by Uros I after the Mongol attacks, to prevent the penetration of new invasion through the Ibar gorge, and to protect access to its endowment, Sopocani and Nemanja’s Studenica from that side.
The second assumption is that it was built in the beginning of the thirteenth century by father of Stefan Uros the Crowned, in order to protect his legacies Zica and Studenica.
