Veliko Gradiste
Municipality of Veliko Gradiste is located in the northeastern part of Serbia, and belongs to the Danube region. Veliko Gradiste was built on the ruins of Roman fortifications of Pinkum. Traces of military fortifications, a wealthy merchant and mining town, can still be found on the banks of the river Pek.
With the weakening of the Roman Empire, and the onrush of Asian tribes of Huns and Avars, the city loses its independence. Until the formation of Serbian Despotate in this region various nations and conquering armies held this reagion.
Name of Veliko Gradiste was first mentioned in the Ravanica Charter from 1381. With the arrival of Turks in this region the city lost its importance. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the city was named Ipek in Turkish book. The city began to develop after the expulsion of Turks from this area.
In Veliko Gradiste we can see: the old part of town rich in facade ornamentation from the nineteenth century, the church of Sv. Archangel Gabriel, the building of high school, city library and customs. Proximity of Srebrno Jezero (lake) is very important.
