Vrsac

Municipality of Vrsac is situated in Vojvodina, and belongs to the South Banat District. Municipal center is the city of Vrsac, located on the edge of the Pannonian Plain in the foothills of the mountains of Vrsac.


Since ancient times Kimerci, Celts, Dacians occasionally lived in this area. The Romans had a watchtower at the site of today's Vrsacke towers, Sarmatians come after them, Slavs settled here in the VIII century, and a century later Hungarians.

The first written document which mentions the name of the town of Vrsac was from the beginning of the fourteenth century, when a fortress (Tower) was built. By unification os Serbian and German parts of Vrsac in 1794, in particular by gaining market privileges in 1804, and the status of the free royal city, Vrsac becomes economic, trade and cultural center of the whole region.

Culture:

- The tower is the remainder of former military and strategic fortifications buil probably in mid-fourteenth century,
- City Hall (Magistrate), which today is the Municipal Assembly of Vrsac (built during three centuries, in XVIII, XIX and XX),
- Sterija house,
- Building ‘Two guns’,
- Mesic Monastery, located near the city, founded in the sixteenth century,
- Diocese of Banat Palace, built in the middle of the eighteenth century (1757-1760). The court has a miraculous chapel with an icon of Holy Virgin, and the iconostasis of the great painter Nikola Neskovic, grandfather from the mother’s side of Jovan Sterija Popovic,
- Old Pharmacy (from the second half of the eighteenth century),
- Uspenje (small) church, dedicated to the Virgin, and celebrates Assumption, built in 1861,
- Cathedral (large) church, dedicated to Holy father Nikolaj, located opposite the Diocesan Court, built in 1785, in place of the old church,
- Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Gerhard, built in 1861,
- Chapel of St. Roko is one of the oldest buildings in Vrsac, built in the first half of the eighteenth century, in gratitude for the cessation of a plague epidemic.
