Veliki Beckerek (Nagybecskerek), the old name of the place, became the market in1769.The city suffered catastrofic fire in 1807. Since 1935 the city is known as Petrovgrad, and from the 1946th – as Zrenjanin, after the national hero Zarko Zrenjanin Uca.
