Gornji Milanovac

Gornji Milanovac municipality is located in Morava region. The municipality of Gornji Milanovac has the mountain Rudnik in the north, and Vujan on the south. The territory of the municipality of Gornji Milanovac borders with Ljig, Arandjelovac, Topola, Kragujevac, Knic, Cacak, Pozega, and Mionica. Rivers that flow through the municipality are Despotovica, Gruza, Dicina, Cemernica, and Kamenica. Municipal Center is the town of Gornji Milanovac.


Gornji Milanovac is a relatively young settlement. It was founded by Prince Alexander of Serbia in1853 by resettlement from Brusnica (Old Bazaar). For six years the city was called Despotovic (name of river that flows through it) until Prince Miloš returned to the throne in 1859, and changed it in the memory of Milan’s brother that died in Romania in 1810.

Cultural monumets:

  • There is a building of a former county government in the city, as old as the settlement itself.
  • In front of that building are statues of the founders – Prince Aleksandar and Duke Milan Obrenovic, bust of Zivojin Misic that commanded of Kolubara battle from that building in 1914, and two plates of the Charter on the establishment of the city, where the change of name is mentioned.
  • Church of Sveta Trojica founded by Milos Obrenovic in 1860.
  • Hill of Peace if also part of the city, with the monument of peace built recently
  • Norway House (a combination of Viking’s ship and old Serbian houses), monument to the memory of connections of our and Norwegian prisoners of camps, one of the expressions of friendship of Serbian and Norwegian people. There is an exhibition of photos, documents and objects from the time of suffering in Norwegian camps too.
  • The city was moved, but at the old place, two or three kilometers further south, old bazaar still lives. It is the church from the 1836th, and here lie the bones of Duke Milan Obrenovic, recently transferred from Romania.
