Indjija

Indjija is located in Vojvodina, in the southeastern part of Srem, on the southern slopes of Fruska Gora. Indjija is first mentioned as feud of family Suljok de Lekce in 1455. According to written sources, Indjija mentioned in 1746 as a village, when Marko Pejacevic called the landloards to come, and when the settling of Serbs began.


At the beginning of the nineteenth century Czechs and Germans came, and at the end of the century Hungarians too. From the large migration in 1948, the majority of the population are Serbs. After that, Indjija developed into a powerful economic center of this part of Srem.

Sights:

  • Municipal Administration Building, house of Vojinovic family, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter, Zupa’s court and urban houses with eclectic street facades with the elements of baroque, classicism, secession, and rainassance. Church of the Presentation of the Virgin was built a bit earlier, and for its proportions it is one of the most beautiful and gracefull buildings in Srem from the eighteen centuary
  • Interesting rural settlment Maradik, or the popular ‘Maradik house’, which provides an oportunity for introduction of the tradition of this part of Srem, with exibits of items more than 200 years old, and an ethnic restaurant where traditional dishes are served.
  • Panoramic tour of Stari Slankamen by water, with tour to the mouth of Tizsa, where Attila the Hun was burried, according to legend.

  • Winter fest, a one-day musica festival (February)
  • Vojvodina wine fair (March)
  • Srem’s Horse Shoe held on May the 8th every year, on day of the Holy Apostle Mark (Mark’s day) in Novi Karlovac. It is a multi category competition – from one to seven horses.

  • Ethno festival in May, in the Indjija’s pedestrian zone
  • Danube night: a folklore festival held every July in the terrace of the House of Culture in Stari Slankamen
  • Scene festival is a summer festival held in attractive locations of the city (during July and August), on the summer stage where audience can see significant artistic accomplishments: theater, movies, concerts, promitions, etc.
  • Art colony titled ‘To the Srems, from Srem’
  • Jazz festival. Indjija cultural center in cooperation with the Belgrade jazz Festival since 2007. organized in October.
