Rudnik

Mountain Rudnik dominates the Sumadia, located about 100 km south of Belgrade. The highest peak is Veliki Sturac (1,132 meters). Rudnik has eight peaks over 1,000 meters high. Rudnik was center of mining long before arrival of the Slavs. Before the Romans, these regions were inhabited by the Illyrians and Celts. The rich traces of material culture shows us that Rudnik was a large Roman settlement with mint.

Serbian rulers and feudal lords fought over Rudnik for a long time. Dinar of the king Dragutin, minted on Rudnik, is the first Serbian dinar with Cyrillic inscription. In the fourteenth century Dubrovnik and the Saxons had their colonies here, and Rudnik becomes very significant after the fall of Novo Brdo in 1441. Rudnik, with its mineral wealth (silver, lead, copper), was not the only source of income for the Serbian rulers, but it was the town with developed handcrafts and trade, from where the cultural influence spread to the entire Serbia.

Because it is a well forested area with nature trails of health near major cities, Rudnik is suitable for the development of summer and winter health, school, sports and hunting tourism. Due to its excellent climatic conditions (a lot of sunshine during the year, air flow, high ionization of air, unpolluted natural environment), Rudnik was named for the air spa in 1922.

Guests can hike to Veliki Sturac, steep volcanic hills of Ostrvica that end with the walls of Jerina’s city, or they can visit nearby historical sites of Oplenac and Takovo, monasteries Vracevsnica, Voljavca and Nikolje. Also, there is a possibility for hunting high and small game.
