Senta

Senta municipality is situated in Vojvodina, and belongs to the North Banat District. Municipal center is the city of Senta, located on the bank of the river Tisa. Senta has grown around the monastery. It was first mentioned in 1216, and developed thanks to the favorable geographical position, on an important crossing over the river Tisa.


From the fourteenth century it was in the possession of the Budim Archbishop. In 1506 it became a free royal city. Senta is best known after the Senta’s battle, held on 11th of September in 1697, which was a significant event for the European history because most of Hungary was liberated from the Turks at that time. This victory ended the Turkish conquest of the area of Central Europe.

Today, Senta is educational and cultural center of this part of Vojvodina. The oldest art colony in Vojvodina was established in Senta (1952), and with the greatest rosary in the country, Senta is very beautiful.
